SANTA CLARA -- Kyle Williams will return punts Sunday at Candlestick Park, as Ted Ginn Jr. did not practice Friday due to a right ankle sprain. The 49ers list Ginn, who has not practiced in 19 days, as "questionable" for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. Running back Brandon Jacobs is also listed as questionable. He has missed 27 days of practice with a left knee sprain."Getting close -- getting darn close," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday. "They might have a shot this week."But it appears obvious that neither Ginn nor Jacobs will be available Sunday night. Williams will resume his role as the 49ers' punt returner.Williams returned one punt for 20 yards on Sunday in the 49ers' 30-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. His return helped set up David Akers' NFL-record-tying 63-yard field goal on the final play of the first half."It's been very good. Kyle is very good," Harbaugh said. "We'd like to keep improving, and hopefully he'll be sensational this week. That would be a big plus for us."With Ginn unavailable, Perrish Cox is the 49ers' backup punt returner. Kendall Hunter will handle kickoff-return duties.
Meanwhile, it appears as if the Lions could play Sunday without three-quarters of their starting defensive backfield.Rookie right cornerback Bill Bentley, a third-round pick from Louisiana-Lafayette, is out with a concussion. Left cornerback Chris Houston (ankle) and free safety Louis Delmas (knee) are doubtful.Fourth-year cornerback Jacob Lacey and sixth-year safety John Wendling started Week 1 against the St. Louis Rams for the Lions in place of Houston and Delmas. Veteran cornerback Drayton Florence played more than half of the Lions' defensive snaps in the opener, as he entered the action when Bentley was injured.INJURY REPORT
