The Giants recalled pitchers Mike Kickham and Jean Machi from Triple-A Fresno and made room on the 25-man roster by placing Chad Gaudin on the disabled list and designating Jeff Francoeur for assignment.

Right-hander Gaudin, moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation in early June, allowed eight runs on 11 hits and four walks in four innings in his last start on Aug. 16 in Miami. He has been placed on the 15-day DL with carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Barry Zito, who was moved to the bullpen after his July 30 start, will return to the rotation and start Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.

Kickham, a 24-year-old left-hander, allowed 22 earned runs in 18.2 innings over five appearances, three starts, with the Giants earlier this season, but has a 4.31 ERA over 110.2 innings with Triple-A Fresno.

Right-handed reliever Machi, 31, has a 3.34 ERA over 35 major-league innings this season and a 0.98 ERA in 18.1 innings with the Grizzlies.
