SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants have finalized their roster and informed all parties. They’ll wait until Saturday to make it public.
Barring Tim Lincecum waking up with a left knee the size of a pomelo, here’s my guess (call it informed speculation) at the 25 players who will stand on the line Monday at Chase Field:
Rotation (5): Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong
Bullpen (7): Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez, Santiago Casilla, Yusmeiro Petit, David Huff, Jean Machi, Juan Gutierrez.
Catchers (2): Buster Posey, Hector Sanchez.
Infielders (6): Brandon Belt, Joaquin Arias, Brandon Crawford, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Hicks, Ehire Adrianza.
Outfielders (5): Angel Pagan, Hunter Pence, Michael Morse, Gregor Blanco, Juan Perez.
Tyler Colvin gets aced out by a better defensive player, Perez, who had a strong spring with the bat as well. Derek Law’s time will come, but for now he’ll anchor the bullpen at Triple-A Fresno.
Second baseman Marco Scutaro (back) and left-hander Jeremy Affeldt (knee sprain) open the season on the disabled list.
The Giants have one 40-man roster opening and they’d need to purchase two contracts (Hicks and Gutierrez). So they’ll have to make a trade or, much more likely, designate someone for assignment. The top candidate would appear to be first baseman Angel Villalona, who has major league power but didn’t show much this spring and is least likely to be an asset to help any club this year. Other candidates could be Nick Noonan, Roger Kieschnick or Mike Kickham.
Again, things can change before the Giants have to set the roster at noon on Sunday. For now, this is your team.
