SAN FRANCISCOThe Giants set a franchise record and tied the MLB mark for most pitchers used in an extra-innings game on Tuesday, so it's no secret the bullpen arms were heavily iced last night. But less than 24 hours later, manager Bruce Bochy said he won't hesitate picking up the direct line to Mark Gardner in the bullpen Wednesday.
"I'd like to stay away from all of 'e,," Bochy said with a smile. After ten relievers combined for seven and two-thirds innings Tuesday, "They're doing okay," Bochy acknowledged. "I'd like to give (Sergio) Romo a break. But everyone's available."Romo pitched two full innings -- more than any other reliever -- but he only needed 16 pitches to retire his six-pack of batters. Jose Mijares led the charge with 23 pitches, Dan Otero threw 18 and Javier Lopez offered 16 times. --The Giants have added five arms since rosters expanded on Sept. 1, but they're preparing to add another late-inning toy in the form of Clay Hensley."He'll be ready to go when he's eligible," Bochy confirmed.Hensley, who was placed on the DL with a strained right groin on Aug. 29, is eligible to be activated before the Giants' three-game series in Arizona beginning on Sept. 14. He had his Triple-A rehab assignment Wednesday in the form of a simulated game against Brett Pill, Francisco Peguero, Eli Whiteside, Emmannuel Burriss and Justin Christian."Felt great," Hensley said. "It's good to be out there, I'm tired of watching."His pitches popped in the catcher's glove, and only Pill made solid contact against him. Hensley, 33, is 4-3 with a 4.37 ERA for the Giants this season, although he allowed nine earned runs in his final eight outings before hitting the disabled list, and Bochy said the groin strain was affecting his stuff and location. Hensley carried a 2.95 ERA into his rough patch.
