Giants notes: Injury ‘shocked' Kelby; Pagan nears return

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy knew he would be giving a stream of injury updates after the day off. He did not expect to be giving an update on Kelby Tomlinson.

The young backup infielder was removed late in Wednesday's game, but not because his thumb was hurting. Bochy put Joe Panik in to bolster the defense and Tomlinson went about his normal routine after the game, working out and then heading home.

"He woke up (Thursday) and it was killing him," Bochy said. "I think Kelby was as surprised and shocked as we were."

Tomlinson got an MRI that revealed a moderate strain. He'll be in a splint for two weeks, and when you throw rehab games in, you're probably looking at nearly a month without a player who can fill in at four positions. The Giants called up Ramiro Pena as part of a set of moves. Bochy said he can use Pena at second, short or third. The veteran has mostly been playing in the middle of the field in Triple-A.

"I was surprised," Pena said. "But I'm really happy to be here and excited about helping this team, too."

Pena was concussed earlier in the year and missed eight days, but he's all clear now. It would be interesting if he makes his first appearance Sunday. He lives in Culiacan, Mexico, the hometown of Dodgers starter Julio Urias.

As for the others ...

--- Angel Pagan is scheduled to fly to El Paso tomorrow and play rehab games for the River Cats on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. He would return in time to be in Wednesday's lineup, but Bochy is hoping Pagan cuts his rehab appearance short.

"He could talk me into that," Bochy said, smiling. "Very easily."

--- Buster Posey had a cortisone shot in St. Louis on Sunday and he was feeling pretty good when he came to the park today. Trainers will keep an eye on him, but he should be good to go this weekend.

--- Matt Cain threw a bullpen session today and it sounds like he'll start Monday unless something pops up in the next couple of days. Sergio Romo will throw off the bullpen mound tomorrow. He remains weeks away.

--- Ehire Adrianza is so far away that Bochy didn't even have any fresh news on him. Adrianza said he's going to start running next week, but it sure sounds like it'll be around the All-Star break before he can return. Adrianza was supposed to miss eight weeks. Today is the eight-week mark. The foot fracture has simply been slow to heal.

--- The Giants signed Chris Denorfia yesterday, and he'll spend about two weeks working out in Scottsdale since he wasn't playing anywhere. Then he'll join Triple-A Sacramento.

"Right now we're a little nicked-up and he's a right-handed bat who can play anywhere in the outfield and he's got experience coming off the bench," Bochy said. "I've always liked him. He can run, steal a base, and he's always swung the bat well against us. He gives you more depth."

Denorfia is a .317 hitter in 223 career plate appearances against the Giants. Bochy sure made it sound like he'd like to have him up here at some point if Denorfia can find his rhythm down in Triple-A.
