Giants notes: Posey, Vitale join forces; Nunez out again

SAN FRANCISCO -- Buster Posey got choked up during a press conference earlier this season that introduced the work he would be doing to help end pediatric cancer. On Wednesday, his friend Dick Vitale showed even more emotion.

The legendary college basketball broadcaster joined Posey for a hospital visit on Tuesday and the two held a joint media session Wednesday to discuss the work they're doing together. Posey and Vitale are hosting a joint fundraiser and on Saturday they will honor patients and raise awareness for pediatric cancer.

"I can go on and on about this more than basketball," Vitale said. "I'm telling you, we've got to do something about it."

Vitale said it was "criminal" that only four percent of cancer funds are dedicated to pediatric cancer research, a fact Posey has quoted in the past when talking about why this has become the focus of his charitable efforts. Vitale and Posey met at the suggestion of Posey's agent, Jeff Berry. Their work will benefit the charity started by Buster and Kristen Posey, as well as the V Foundation.

"Hopefully it's a good package," Posey said of joining up with Vitale. "With his intensity and my kind of calmness."

Posey and Vitale do seem to disagree on one thing, though.

"He should be a Ray," Vitale, a Florida resident, said. "They should have taken him with the first pick in the draft. They would have had a new stadium by now."

Vitale said every cent he raises personally goes to the V Foundation's work toward pediatric cancer. The same holds true for Buster and Kristen, who take charitable donations through Posey's website.

--- Manager Bruce Bochy said Eduardo Nuñez is actually dealing with an oblique injury, but he is expected back in the lineup Thursday night. Elsewhere on the injury front, Gregor Blanco will be reevaluated today to see if he can contribute this season.

Derek Law was activated off the DL, but Bochy said he'll get a lower-leverage inning or two before going back to the tight spots. Then the manager added: "But with that said, it's all hands on deck." Remember, Bochy wanted to get Joe Nathan some ease-in work and he ended up in two big spots right away. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Law in the ninth sometime this week.

--- Gorkys Hernandez and Kelby Tomlinson continue to hit left-handed pitching, and that might get both players a lot of action next week in Los Angeles. Bochy said Hernandez and Tomlinson will continue to get starts against southpaws. The Giants will face Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill next week.
