PHOENIX -- The Giants set their opening day roster on Sunday, making official the roster moves that had trickled out over previous days.

The Giants are going with a 12-man staff, but only one left-handed reliever: Ty Blach (the reliever), Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Johnny Cueto, Cory Gearrin, George Kontos, Derek Law, Mark Melancon, Matt Moore, Neil Ramirez, Jeff Samardzija, Hunter Strickland.

Buster Posey and Nick Hundley will be the catchers, of course, with Conor Gillaspie and Aaron Hill filling out an infield that starts with regulars Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Joe Panik and Eduardo Nuñez. Denard Span and Hunter Pence will be joined by a left field platoon of Chris Marrero and Jarrett Parker. Gorkys Hernandez is the final outfielder.

To clear 40-man roster spots for the newcomers -- Marrero, Ramirez and Hill -- the Giants put Will Smith (Tommy John surgery) on the 60-day DL and designated right-handers Ian Gardeck and Ray Black. Gardeck is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will not be ready at the start of the season. Black, the 103 mph man, continues to have trouble with his health and command of the strike zone.

Two players from last year's squad will start the season on the new 10-day disabled list. Trevor Brown is recovering from an ankle injury and Mac Williamson has a quad strain. Both will join Triple-A Sacramento at some point.
