SAN FRANCISCO -– The Giants will skip Tim Hudson’s start on Friday against the Miami Marlins because of a strained left hip and instead hand the ball to right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, manager Bruce Bochy said.

Hudson, 38, felt hip discomfort while warming up for his start last Sunday at Dodger Stadium, when he wasn’t his sharpest but held the Dodgers to two runs on eight hits in six innings of a 7-4 victory.

Hudson jogged out to shag in the outfield on Thursday and Bochy said the hip already has improved, but there was no reason to push the 38-year-old. Hudson is expected to miss just one turn and there are no current plans to place him on the disabled list.

“We think he’ll be fine … after just skipping him once,” Bochy said. “It loosened up for him but we got him out of there early and I’m glad we did. This thing is still lingering a little bit and we think in a few days it will clear up.”

Hudson has been the Giants’ most reliable starting pitcher, going 4-2 with a 2.09 ERA in eight outings. Sunday’s start was the first time he didn’t complete at least seven innings, the longest streak by a Giant to start a season since Vida Blue in 1981.

Hudson has issued just four walks in 60.1 innings.

Petit, 29, is 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA and already has made two spot starts this season, including six shutout innings on April 29 when Matt Cain sliced his right index finger with a kitchen knife hours before the first pitch and couldn’t start.

In other injury news, Pablo Sandoval hurt his left big toe while starting out of the batter’s box in the first inning Wednesday but he’s back in Thursday’s lineup.

Far from AT&T Park, back in San Diego, Bochy is keeping a close watch on the wildfires that continue to pop up and spread due to the heat and high winds there. Bochy said one fire is within 1 ½ miles of his house near Poway. One neighbor was packing up belongings and another was staying put. Keep a good thought for everyone there, obviously.
