SAN FRANCISCOMadison Bumgarner threw his first career shutout to establish a new San Francisco-era record for consecutive scoreless innings and lead the Giants to their fourth-straight win, a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

NEWS: Giants set new S.F. scoreless innings mark
Starting pitching report: Madison Bumgarner had a no-hitter through five innings before Ryan Hanigan led off the sixth with a clean single back up the middle. With the memory of Matt Cains perfect game still fresh, Bumgarner got a nice ovation from the crowd when his shot at history ended.Prior to the hit, Bumgarner issued two walks and struck out five Reds. The Giants young lefty recovered from the lone hit with three straight outs to end the sixth, then worked flawless seventh and eighth innings. Bumgarners eight shutout innings tied the San Francisco-era record for consecutive scoreless innings with 35, but his night wasnt over.Bruce Bochy let Bumgarner come back out for the ninth with no one warming up in the bullpen and the move paid off. Bumgarner completed the final frame for a new scoreless innings streak record, the first shutout of his career, and his 10th win of the season. His final line: 9 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (107 pitches, 72 for strikes)Bullpen report: Brad Penny never got the call to warm up. At the plate: The Giants didnt score a run against Johnny Cueto in 16 innings last season. They scored two in the first against the Reds ace.Melky Cabrera worked a two-out walk and advanced to second on Buster Poseys opposite-field single. Angel Pagan followed with a single that set off a hectic sequence of events. With Cabrera rounding third, Reds right-fielder Jay Bruce attempted to gun him down at home, but his throw was off-line in the direction of the visitors dugout. Cincinnatis catcher Ryan Hanigan couldnt corral the throw, leading Posey to take off for home. Cueto was slow to break to the plate and Posey slid in safely just ahead of the tag for the Giants second run. Pagan committed the Cardinal sin of making the third out at third base, as he was caught trying to advance right after Posey scored. For those scoring at home, the play was ruled a single and an RBI for Pagan, followed by an E-9, 2-1-5 out.Cueto recovered to keep the Giants scoreless for four straight innings, but ran into trouble again in the sixth. After Posey erased Cabreras leadoff single with a double play ball, Pagan walked to keep the inning alive. Pablo Sandoval followed with a sharp line drive to left field that made Todd Frazier look like a Little Leaguer. Frazier broke in for the ball before realizing he had misread it as he watched the ball sail over his head for a run-scoring double.Bumgarner joined the hit parade in the seventh inning with a sharp single to left and came around to score on a stand-up triple from Gregor Blanco, who scored moments later when Ryan Theriot bounced one up the middle past a drawn-in infield for a 5-0 lead. Every member of the Giants starting lineup reached base Thursday. Brandon Crawford was the only hitless Giant, but he walked in the fifth.Cabrera was the only Giant with multiple hits, as his two singles gave him 108 hits and 35 multi-hit games on the season, which leads the Major Leagues. Vying for a starting job in the All-Star Game, Cabrera also walked twice to reach base in all four of his plate appearances. In the field: Brandon Crawford showed impressive range and athleticism to get to a ground ball up the middle off the bat of Miguel Cairo and complete an off-balance throw behind second base to Brandon Belt to end the second inning. The Giants committed no errors for their sixth straight game. After a sloppy start to the season with 50 errors in their first 48 contests, the Giants have just nine miscues in their last 26 games. On the bases: Melky Cabreras leadoff single in the fourth was wiped clean on a 1-3-6 caught stealing. The Giants had been successful in 24 of their last 27 steal attempts heading into Thursdays game.Buster Posey followed Cabreras caught stealing with a walk, but was caught leaning and picked off first base to end the inning.Attendance: The Giants announced a crowd of 41,626 for the 123rd consecutive sellout at AT&T Park. The team did not reveal how many fans were convinced to make last-minute All-Star Game votes by E-40.Up next: Mr. Perfect Matt Cain will return to the AT&T Park mound for the first time since his historic outing against the Houston Astros Friday. Cain (9-2, 2.27) will start opposite the Reds Mike Leake (2-5, 4.46), who owns a 2.82 ERA over his last eight starts.
