PandaWatch: Sandoval goes yard

Pablo Sandoval hit a home run in the ninth inning to go 2-for-5 with a double and that homer in game No. 2 of his minor league rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose.

Hitting third as the designated hitter, Sandoval fouled out to left field to end the first inning in his first at bat. In his second time up, with two outs in the third, he hit the ball well, but flew out to the warning track in left.

In his third at bat, with two outs in the fifth, he smacked a gapper to right-center field for a double but was stranded.

He struck out swinging in the seventh, but came up again with two outs in the ninth. Facing Justin Souza, Sandoval pulled a ball over the fence in right-center to finish his day strong.

Sandoval has not played for the Giants in a month. He was diagnosed with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand on May 2 and had surgery to remove it.

In his rehab games the Giants are only allowing the switch-hitting Sandoval to bat from the left side, to prevent his injured left hand from gripping the knob of the bat
