The Washington Nationals have signed Nate Schierholtz to a minor league deal as they gear up for a postseason run according to Fox Sports.

The pickup comes just days after Schierholtz was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs.

Schierholtz fell into an extended slump this season hitting .192 with just six home runs after a career-best year in 2013.

The Danville native was drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 2003 draft.

Over five plus seasons in San Francisco, Schierholtz appeared in 503 games, hitting .270 with 23 home runs and 118 RBI, accompanying the team to their 2010 World Series victory.
