SAN DIEGO –- The Giants continue to find embarrassing ways to go backwards.
Third baseman Pablo Sandoval was taken out of Saturday’s game in the first inning after a pitch struck him near the left elbow.
Nothing embarrassing about that … except Sandoval actually swung at the 0-1 slider from Padres right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne. He was checked by trainers and remained in the game, but the next pitch was a ball and Brandon Belt was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the inning.
So, not trying to get existential on you, but Sandoval got hurt at the plate without having an official plate appearance.
Joaquin Arias replaced Sandoval at third base in the bottom of the first inning.
The Giants took the lead on Gregor Blanco’s solo home run in the second inning, which helped take the sting out of a promising first-inning rally that went awry. The Giants had two on and no out before Buster Posey lined into a double play.
At least Bruce Bochy didn’t start the runners, or it would’ve been an easy triple play for the Padres.
I’ll post the latest on Sandoval on my Twitter feed (@CSNBaggs) once I have it.
