The Sharks will give former NHL All-Star and left wing Sergei Samsonov a tryout in training camp, according to a report in the Edmonton Journal.

Thats according to Samsonovs agent, former Shark Igor Larionov.

Larionov said his client Sergei Samsonov, the one-time Oilers winger, will be getting a tryout with the San Jose Sharks, if there is an NHL training camp. Samsonov, who was on the Oilers 2006 team, didnt play at all last season.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson had no comment on the report.

Samsonov, 33, is a former first round pick of the Boston Bruins in 1997 (eighth overall) and a veteran of 14 NHL seasons. He has 571 points (235g, 336a) in 888 games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago, Carolina and Florida. Current Sharks Joe Thornton (first overall) and Patrick Marleau (second overall) were taken in the same draft.

Samsonov and Thornton were teammates in Boston for the first seven-plus years of their careers, and both were traded during the 2005-06 season - Thornton to San Jose and Samsonov to Edmonton, which reached the Stanley Cup Final that year, beating the Sharks in the second round along the way.

In 2010-11, the last time he suited up in the NHL, Samsonov had 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points in 78 games with the Hurricanes and Panthers.

The 5-8, 188-pound Samsonov won the Calder Trophy in his rookie year of 1997-98 and was named to the NHL All-Star team in 2001.
