Sharks hire Johnson as assistant coach, relieve Shaw

The Sharks have hired Jim Johnson as an assistant coach and relieved Matt Shaw, the club announced on Tuesday afternoon.The move comes one day after the team brought in Larry Robinson as an associate coach to work on Todd McLellan's staff.RELATED: Robinson brings experience, credibility to Sharks
Johnson joins the Sharks after spending last season with the Washington Capitals, where he was an assistant to Dale Hunter. Johnson, 49, has also served as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2010 was the interim head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in 1999-00.Johnson played 14 years in the NHL as a defenseman with Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Washington, Dallas and Phoenix.Shaw spent the previous three seasons as an assistant with the Sharks. Prior to that, he coached with McLellan in the Minnesota organization with the AHLs Houston Aeros from 2001-05.
