The Sharks announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to a five-year contract extension with defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

According to TVA Sports in Canada, the deal is reportedly for 21 million, which averages out to 4.2 million per season. It will begin at the start of the 2013-14 season.

Marc-Edouard has grown into an important part of our organization over the last six seasons, said general manager Doug Wilson, in a statement released by the team. He can play in all situations and has blossomed into a very trusted player on both sides of the puck. We are very happy to have him on our team for the next six seasons.

The 6-1, 200-pound Vlasic has spent six years in the NHL, all with San Jose. In 471 career games, the 25-year-old has 22 goals and 111 assists for 133 points and 175 penalty minutes.

In 2011-12, Vlasic played all 82 games and was second on the Sharks in ice time with 23:09 per game. He had four goals and 19 assists for 23 points and 40 penalty minutes.

A second round draft pick by the club in 2005, Vlasic was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. He will complete a four-year, 12.4 million contract in 2012-13.
