Rudy Gay can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, should he choose to opt out of the final year of his contract which will pay him $19.3 million next season.
The majority of players like to sign for as many guaranteed years as possible as soon as the option is available, both to secure long-term financial stability as well as to protect themselves in case of injury.
Close to $20 million is a lot to leave on the table, however, and with Gay’s reputation as a high-volume, low-efficiency scorer, it may be difficult to secure anywhere close to those types of dollars in his next deal on a per-year basis.
If Gay does choose to opt out and pursue free agency, though, he’ll have plenty of teams interested in his services for the right price. And the Suns might be among those near the top of that list.
