Former Stanford star Mark Madsen, who led the Cardinal to a Final Four berth in 1998, will be hired as an assistant coach under men's basketball coach Johnny Dawkins, according to sources close to the program.

The hiring will be announced later Tuesday.

Madsen spent 2010 as an assistant coach with the NDBL's Utah Flash, where he focused on teaching low-post fundamentals.

Madsen was a two-time All-American and a two-time All-Pac-10 selection after starring at San Ramon Valley High. He finished his career ranked in Stanford's top-10 list in blocks and rebounds.

Stanford made four NCAA tournament appearances with the 6-foot-9 power forwardcenter.

He played nine seasons in the NBA and won a pair of NBA titles with the Lakers (2001, '02). His lifetime NBA averages are 2.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists and 11.8 minutes played per game.

In fall 2010, Madsen enrolled in the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is expected to earn his MBA in June 2012
