STANFORD -- Mark Appel (10-1) avenged his only loss of the season, striking out 10 in a four-hitter as top-seeded Stanford (39-16) defeated fourth-seeded Fresno State (30-27) 9-1 on the first day of the Stanford Regional.

Stanford continues on in the winner's bracket and will take on Pepperdine at 6 p.m. Saturday. Fresno State faces Michigan State in Saturday's elimination game at 1 p.m.

Appel retired 12 in a row until giving up his first run in the seventh. Appel, with his fifth complete game of the season, walked one and struck out 10.

Austin Wilson drove in three with a two-run single in the fifth and a bases loaded walk as a part of a three-run sixth.

Wilson's two-out single up the middle scored two and gave Stanford a 2-0 lead in the fifth. A one-out infield single by Danny Diekroeger followed by a two-out bases loaded hit by pitch and Wilson walk made it 5-0 and chased starter Justin Haley an inning later.

Haley went the first 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. The righthander also walked six, three that scored.

The second single for Kenny Diekroeger led to three runs, as his two-out, two-run single in the eighth made it 8-1, before a throwing error gave the Cardinal nine.

Appel would come out for the ninth inning, and despite walking the leadoff batter, he would set the next three Bulldog batters down in order to put the finishing touches on his fifth complete game of the season.

NOTES: Appel hit double digits in strikeouts for the eighth time this season.
