Borland was a two-star prospect coming out of Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio. He chose to attend the University of Wisconsin. Borland was named the 2009 Big Ten's Freshman of the Year after playing in 13 games, starting six. He led the Badgers with five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. In the Champs Sports Bowl against Miami, Borland had two tackles for loss, including a sack and two quarterback hurries. He missed all but parts of three games due to a torn left labrum in his shoulder in 2010.
