Kerr was selected in the second round (No. 50 overall) of the 1988 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns, behind future head coaches Danny Manning (Tulsa and Wake Forest University, No. 1 overall), Brian Shaw (Denver Nuggets, No. 24 overall), Vinny Del Negro (Los Angeles Clippers, No. 29) and Keith Smart (Cavaliers, Warriors and Kings; No. 41). Kerr spent one season in Phoenix before being traded to Cleveland in 1989.
