Recently I had the pleasure of heading off to Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland to cover their softball team's holiday giving event. The Lady Dragons have a tradition where they donate one bag of food to “Building Futures with Women and Children” for every win they recorded the previous season. It's a great event and really gets the girls involved in the community.
It all starts with great parents and coaches surrounding the BOD softball team who help with donations and organize the event, but the student-athletes do their part as well. The softballers go from store to store looking for companies to donate turkeys, pies and potatoes -- all the fixings of a traditional holiday meal to give to BFWWC. Once the ladies gather up all the food, they bag it up evenly, tie ribbons and cards to the bags and head over to the shelter.
The BOD softball team won 20 games last season, so 20 bags of food arrived at the shelter with the ladies. That's 20 families who'll be having a holiday dinner which wouldn't have previously. It's not a huge amount of money the Dragons give back, but every little bit helps this time of year. It's also a great way to show high school aged young people that giving back really does mean something.
So I'd like to thank Bishop O'Dowd softball coach Mike Cobb, his players and their families for doing their part. It was a great experience for me covering the event and I look forward to it next season. Hopefully, the ladies can win 20 or more games again this season, because every little bit helps.
