Highlights: Washington vs. Newark Memorial women's soccer
Girls soccer is one of those sports that tends to fly under the radar. Here in the Bay Area, we have some of the top girls soccer teams in the state, but most people are not aware of this. One of those teams is the Huskies of Washington High School. I was on the sideline this past week as the Huskies traveled to Newark Memorial to take on the Cougars. Washington, who came into this one 9-0, looked to have the match in the bag before the opening whistle, but the 2-8 Cougars had other plans.
The first half was a defensive battle. Newark Memorial's Junior goalie Jessica Amaral was busy. The Huskies offense had several promising looks at the goal, but Amaral and the rest of the Cougar defense held tough. The score remained deadlocked at zero up until the 73rd minute when Washington's offense showed why they are undefeated. Megan Ravensroft found Elizabeth Yang who fired one to the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
The Huskies held on through the final six minutes to win 1-0, improving to 10-0 on the year. Despite the loss, the Cougars have nothing to hang their heads about. Newark held one of the best teams in the Bay Area to a single goal and played with them until the final whistle.
It was a surprisingly exciting match and hopefully girl's soccer will start to catch on and these student athletes will start to get the recognition they deserve.
