This past week was the final Friday that the Cal Hi Sports Bay Area staff could be found roaming the sidelines under the lights filming a Bay Area high school football game.

For my final assignment of the football season, I was sent to Sacramento State to cover the CCS Open Division champions--the Saint Ignatius Wildcats. They took on the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 winner, the Granite Bay Grizzlies.

It was bitterly cold, but the chilly temperatures didn't seem to effect the Grizzlies or their leading rusher John Cooley-- who capped off three of Granite Bay's first five drives with a touchdown (25,11 and 3 yards). By halftime, Granite Bay was sitting comfortably with a 24-3 lead and was showing no signs of slowing down.

The Grizzlies picked up the second half where they left off finding the end zone two more times for 38-3 lead. It wasn't until the the 2:28 mark in the third quarter that Saint Ignatius's senior quarterback Jack Stinn dropped back and connected with Andrew Vollert in the back of the end zone for the Wildcats first touchdown of the game.

Stinn, who was named the WCAL Most Valuable Quarterback of the Year, threw for another touchdown in the fourth. That throw would be the last score of the game and the Wildcat season, one that ended in 45-17 defeat.

It was a tough loss for the Wildcats, but they played until the final down and left everything out on the field and that is truly all the SI fans and coaches can ask for. I want to congratulate the Wildcats on an outstanding 2012 season as well as all of the other Bay Area high school's that I had the pleasure of covering this year. Thank you for all of the great memories!
