Injury report: LT Penn misses second straight Raiders practice

ALAMEDA – Raiders left tackle Donald Penn has made 155 consecutive starts, and doesn’t want to snap that streak in the playoffs. A bum knee has called his status into question and kept him out of a second straight practice on Thursday.

Penn is rehabbing extensively to prepare for Saturday’s AFC Wild Card round contest at Houston, but it remains uncertain whether he’ll play.

The Raiders have a contingency plan in place. Right tackle Menelik Watson would move to Penn’s spot, with veteran Austin Howard stepping in for Watson.

“Definitely some mixing and matching going on,” Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. “This time of year, a lot of people are banged up. Going to put our healthiest five bodies out there and put them in a good place where they can work cohesively and we get a good end result.”

The Raiders typically release their injury report two days before kickoff, but that mandate it backed up 24 hours on Saturday kickoffs. Penn won’t have a formal designation until Friday afternoon.

There was no change to the team’s injury report, with safety Nate Allen and quarterback Derek Carr still out with injury. Several players, including Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree and Kelechi Osemele have been limited but are expected to play.

That group also includes quarterback Matt McGloin. He seems set to be active as rookie starter Connor Cook’s backup against the Texans.

The Texans ruled outside linebacker John Simon out with a chest injury earlier on Thursday.
