Injury report: Raiders rule Murray out; Smith, Walford questionable

ALAMEDA – Raiders running back Latavius Murray wanted to play Sunday’s game against San Diego. A case of turf toe complicated that wish, and kept him out of practice all week.

The Raiders tried to modify his footwear to relieve pain associated with the ailment, but apparently couldn’t find a solution to keep him available for Week 5. He was formally ruled out on Friday’s official injury report.

Rushing responsibilities will fall to rookies DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard, smaller backs who have been effective thus far. Jamize Olawale will be available in short-yardage situations, though he has deceptive speed in the second level.

The Raiders are holding out hope for a few other ailing starters. Weakside linebacker Malcolm Smith participated in Friday’s walk-thru, his first action of the practice week. He is listed as questionable with a quadriceps injury.

If Smith can’t go, either Daren Bates, primarily a special teams player, or newcomer Perry Riley would start alongside Cory James on the interior.

Tight end Clive Walford is another questionable Raider at a thin position. He was limited over the last two practices with a knee sprain. Outside Walford, Mychal Rivera and practice-squad promotion Ryan O’Malley are the roster’s only other tight ends.

The Chargers will be without their starting cornerbacks Jason Verrett was placed on injured reserve Friday with a torn ACL, and Brandon Flowers was ruled out with a concussion.
