Injury report: Raiders S Joseph ruled out against Chargers

Raiders strong safety Karl Joseph will miss Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers, the team announced Friday afternoon. It will be Joseph’s second straight game sidelined with injury, after suffering a significant toe injury in a home victory over the Buffalo Bills.

The rookie first-round pick was seen hobbling in pain last week and hasn’t appeared during media access windows since.

Veteran Nate Allen will make his second straight start at strong safety. He played well in Joseph’s stead against Kansas City, with 11 tackles and solid pass defense.

He fits in well with the starting secondary thanks to his experience – he has been a starter his entire career – and familiarity with personnel around him.

“All of us has played and practiced with Nate before, so he was able to step right in and play well,” cornerback David Amerson said. “He’s a smart guy and a great communicator. He and Reggie (Nelson) work well together in the back.”

The Raiders also ruled edge rusher Shilique Calhoun and defensive tackle Stacy McGee out of Sunday’s game.

Defensive tackle Darius Latham is questionable but has a real shot to play. Receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree received the same designation and expect to face the Chargers.

Quarterback Derek Carr was not given an injury designation and will play.

San Diego running back Melvin Gordon was formally ruled out of Sunday’s game with hip and knee injuries. Edge rusher Joey Bosa will play after suffering a neck strain last week.
