GREEN BAY, Wis. – Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was a surprise scratch from Friday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
The veteran suffered a strained right quad this week. The injury’s severity is unknown, and it’s unclear how much time Janikowski will miss. Head coach Dennis Allen will update Janikowski’s status after the game.
Janikowski was one of nine scratches prior to the game. Fullback Marcel Reece was not among them.
Neither was rookie quarterback Derek Carr, whom the NFL Network reported would not play against the Packers. Carr passed the NFL’s concussion protocol, but sore ribs would reportedly to keep him out.
Reece and Carr was seen in full-pads and active during pre-game warm-ups.
A note on Reece and Carr: They weren’t scratched, but that doesn’t mean they’ll play.
Receiver Brice Butler (concussion) hadn’t been formally cleared to play on Wednesday, but could go against Green Bay.
We’ll have to see who actually plays.
Reece injured his right foot in last week’s preseason game against Detroit, but received positive news on an undisclosed ailment when X-rays and a subsequent MRI showed no significant damage.
He couldn’t finish Sunday’s practice –- which prompted the MRI –- skipped Monday’s workout, was limited on Tuesday and a full participant on Wednesday.
The Raiders formally scratched, Janikowski, cornerbacks DJ Hayden, Chimdi Chekwa and Taiwan Jones, offensive linemen Lucas Nix and Matt McCants, defensive tackle Justin Ellis and tight ends Nick Kasa and Davis Ausberry.
