ALAMEDA –- Raiders receiver James Jones has worked with the very best.
Prior to this season, Jones spent his career in Green Bay catching passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Now he’s working with rookie Derek Carr, another strong-armed passer with shifty moves, who was named the Raiders starting quarterback on Monday.
Rodgers is often regarded as the best quarterback in football and Carr hasn’t proved anything at the NFL level, but Jones sees similarities between the two.
“I’ve been calling him ‘Baby A-Rod’ since he got here,” Jones said of the second-round pick from Fresno State. “I used to train with Derek out in Fresno, so I’ve been calling him ‘Baby A-Rod’ even when he was in college. He throws it naturally, so I hope he takes advantage of his opportunity.
"We had a real good quarterback competition, and he won it.”
While rookies often struggle at the outset, Jones believes Carr might be better prepared than most.
“He’s real calm, real cool in the pocket,” Jones said. “He really acts like he’s been there before. When you see a rookie come in like that and he’s able to handle himself like that, he’s ready to play. Whether he’s a quarterback or a wide receiver or whatever, he looked ready to play.”
