McKenzie's coaching search ‘will begin immediately'

ALAMEDA -- Reggie McKenzie's first act as the new Raiders general manager was to fire Hue Jackson.His next major undertaking? Finding a replacement."The search will begin immediately," McKenzie said in his introductory media conference Tuesday. "We would start the interview process. I have my short list. The criteria is it doesn't matter offense or defense of my coaches. We just want a winner, a guy we feel can lead this team and move it forward as we embark here on this new era."The coach for this Raider organization, the next coach, will be a coach that we all feel will lead us to our ultimate goal, and that is winning championships. Offense or defensive coordinator types really will play no influence. The No. 1 (criteria) is he can lead, motivate and move our players and our team to victories."The obvious name to come about is that of Winston Moss, Green Bay's Winston Moss, the Packers' assistant head coachinside linebackers and a former Raiders linebacker. And of course, fans are starting to throw Jon Gruden's name in the hopper again."No. 1, with the short list, I will not name names until absolutely needed," McKenzie said.Owner Mark Davis said he has seen McKenzie's short list and while he would not say who was on it either, he did mention that he thought McKenzie would not go solely after Packers assistants.So how involved would Davis be in the search?"Reggies going to be running the show there," Davis said. "But we will consult quite a bit. We will be talking a lot. That's about all I can say on that. Reggie's going to be making the decisions, and that's the way it should be. There's other things that I have to do within the organization, and I'll be able to focus on those now, which I was taken away from for a while."Asked if he was on a specific deadline to hire a head coach, McKenzie nodded."I would like sooner than better," he said. "But if I have to wait, I'll wait. I'm going to work my tail off to hire the best coach. The best fit. And that's all that's going to matter right now. And that will start now. And however long it takes, that's how long it will take. But we want to get the right guy."
