Notes: Washington, Richard will get first-team reps vs Titans

ALAMEDA -– Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio anticipates his starters playing the entire first half of Saturday’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans, maybe a little longer.

He’d also like some reserves to work in at times to see how they fit in with the first unit. That’s sound logic, considering some guys will be rotational players and others could fill in for injured starters.

The Raiders will do that at running back, giving rookies DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard work with the first-team offense.

“I would like to get a few looks at both of those guys with our first-team offensive line,” Del Rio said. “We expect to get that done on Saturday night.”

That would provide a glimpse of some regular-season work, when the Raiders plan to use backs to complement starter Latavius Murray.

Washington and Richard have fared well in the preseason, though Richard missed the first two preseason games with a knee injury.

Washington looked good in the preseason opener, with 75 total yards from scrimmage including eight carries for 43 yards. He was far quieter in Week 2, with eight yards on five carries working with the second unit.

Richard returned to practice this week and Del Rio said the undrafted Southern Mississippi alum should play.

“He had the minor setback,” Del Rio said, “but he has had a good week and we’re excited to see him play.”

Nelson out: Raiders free safety Reggie Nelson missed the week’s practice with an undisclosed injury. Del Rio said it’s likely the veteran will be held out of Saturday’s game.

Veteran Nate Allen has taken first-unit reps in Nelson’s stead, and should start alongside rookie Karl Joseph.

Home, sweet home: The Raiders opened the preseason with consecutive road games, but finally get to play at Oakland Coliseum.

“We’re been on the road the first two weeks, and we’re looking forward to playing in front of our fans,” Del Rio said. “They’re terrific.”
