As with several other positions, the Raiders have been active in the offensive tackle market.
Their preference is to retain left tackle Jared Veldheer, who has represented them well since being drafted in 2010. Veldheer has other suitors. The Arizona Cardinals are among them, according to the Arizona Republic, and the Raiders have not put their eggs in one basket.
A league source confirmed Sunday that the Raiders reached out and declared interest in veteran Eugene Monroe. It's uncertain how serious the interest is, but the Raiders are at least kicking the tires, a top-tier tackle who last played with Baltimore. Monroe certainly won’t come cheap.
The Baltimore Sun also reported that the Raiders have spoken with reps for St. Louis offensive lineman Rodger Saffold since teams were allowed to contact other teams free agents on Saturday morning. Free agency officially begins on Tuesday afternoon.
Monroe is considered the top left tackle available and could command premium dollars, even more than Veldheer. He has 73 starts in 76 games, mostly with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was traded to Baltimore last season.
Saffold has 44 starts in 47 games with the St. Louis Rams, mostly as a left tackle. He primarily played right tackle and right guard last season, but protected the blind side in three seasons prior.
The Baltimore Sun also reported that the Raiders have reached out to other left tackles.
