ALAMEDA –- Raiders defensive tackle Justin Ellis suffered a concussion nearly two weeks ago, and still hasn’t returned to practice.

Ellis was concussed Aug. 8 against the Minnesota Vikings, on just his third professional snap. The fourth-round pick took a blow to the head diving for a loose ball and has been out ever since.

Ellis frequently does conditioning work on the side during portions of practice open to the media, which means he’s passed some early portions of the NFL concussion protocol, but has not been cleared to practice.

“With where we’re at with concussions now and head injuries and everything that we know about them, you want to make sure that you’re cautious with those things and make sure guys are fully cleared before they get back in there,” head coach Dennis Allen said. “They’re all serious and we treat them as such, and we just go through the protocol and whenever they’re cleared and no symptoms, then we’ll put them back out there.”

Ellis has been out 12 days now, during a crucial stretch of the preseason where lineups and positional rotations typically come together.

Ellis practiced frequently with the second unit and was expected to be part of a rotation along the interior line. That’s certainty still possible, but missed time is always hardest on young players.

Some other injury notes:

-- Allen said the Raiders will be cautious with rookie quarterback Derek Carr, who was cleared to practice a few days ago but still hasn’t been cleared to play on Friday against Green Bay.

“We haven’t made that determination yet,” Allen said. “We’re going to be cautious with that to make sure he’s good to go before we put him back out there.”

If Carr doesn’t play, Matt McGloin will take snaps with the second unit.

-- Tight end Scott Simonson (concussion) has been cleared to play. Receiver Brice Butler (concussion) has not yet been cleared despite practicing this week.

-- Fullback Marcel Reece (foot) was a full participant in Wednesday’s work. The veteran wants to play, but it remains uncertain if he will.

-- Cornerback DJ Hayden did some side work during Wednesday’s practice that involved running and cutting, with frequent starts and stops.
