Three and Out: McFadden returns, Hayden speaks
ALAMEDA – Raiders free safety Charles Woodson wore extra padding to protect sore ribs, but removed it a few weeks back. On Sunday, Woodson wished he left it on.
Extra mobility wasn’t worth a solid shot taken against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I took a shot and couldn’t catch my breath for a little while,” Woodson said. “You just go out there and keep grinding.”
That’s what Woodson has done all season. He hadn’t missed a practice due to injury all season. Until Wednesday, anyway. The Raiders gave Woodson some time to rest his ribs, but is expected to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
That’s nothing new. Woodson has all but seven snaps this season, an astonishing clip for a 37-year old thought to be washed up.
He’s played 947 snaps of largely quality football this season, which has padded his paycheck. If he plays 90 percent of the team’s snaps, he’ll make an addition $1.5 million on top of $1.8 million in salary, signing and workout bonuses.
Woodson has been good, but imperfect. He’s missed some tackles and assignments while stuck playing center field with an young secondary in front of him, but Woodson has exceeded expectations after signing with the Raiders this offseason.
“He’s done everything we’ve asked of him to do,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “He’s continued to try and work and get things corrected. He’s been a great asset to our organization.”
Walker still on the shelf: Defensive tackle Vance Walker hasn’t gone through NFL’s protocol on concussion after suffering ahead trauma against the New York Jets. He’s still experiencing symptoms that could keep him out these final two games and has prevented him from attempting to pass test required to practice and play.
