ALAMEDA – Raiders cornerback D.J. Hayden suffered a groin injury on Wednesday and was consequently held out of Thursday’s practice.

The first-round draft pick finished Wednesday’s workout, but the injury prompted the Raiders to shut him down for the time being.

“He wasn’t able to go today,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. “We’ll have to evaluate him and see how he’s doing and see how quickly that thing responds.”

If Hayden can’t play Sunday against the New York Giants, Phillip Adams will fill Hayden’s role as outside corner in the nickel package. Starter Tracy Porter slides into the slot in those situations.

The injury is ill timed for Hayden, who desperately wants a good game to erase memories of a disastrous effort against Philadelphia when he allowed three catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

“The defensive back position is a great position because – especially corner – you may only have four or five plays a game, but those four to five plays make or break a game, as we saw with D.J.,” defensive coordinator Jason Tarver said. “The great ones shake it off and they know they’re going to make the next play. D.J. has that in his mindset, and we just have to keep bringing that out.”

OF NOTE
Seabass kicks: Kicker Sebastian Janikowski was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, after missing Wednesday with a rib injury. Janikowski was able to practice kicking, and coach Dennis Allen said he expects the veteran to be ready to play Sunday against the Giants.

Burris sits out: Linebacker Miles Burris watched practice from the sideline Thursday, a day off from an attempt to move from the physically unable to perform list the the 53-man roster. Burris has roughly two weeks of practice left before the team must active him or place him on season-ending injured reserve. Burris has missed the season with a knee injury.
