With me being out there and other guys returning to their natural position is a comfort for them. That should help the secondary as a whole.
Tracy Porter

ALAMEDA – Tracy Porter’s concussion sent the Raiders secondary into disarray. While an injury typically involves a straight personnel swap, losing the versatile cornerback reshuffled the deck.

That’s because Porter plays two positions – outside corner in the base defense and slot corner in the nickel package. Top outside corner Mike Jenkins had to move into the slot in the nickel, which brought Phillip Adams in for Jenkins. It left the Raiders with lesser options at two spots instead of one, with tentative rookie D.J. Hayden on the other side.

Brandian Ross could’ve helped in the slot and kept Jenkins outside, but he was already filling in for injured strong safety Tyvon Branch.

The Raiders won’t have to relive that mess. Porter was cleared to practice on Wednesday and is expected to play on Sunday against Washington.

He’s a stabilizing presence on the back end who puts everyone in the right place.

“You want guys comfortable in their position, and I’m comfortable playing both of my regular spots,” Porter said. “With me being out there and other guys returning to their natural position is a comfort for them. That should help the secondary as a whole.”

Porter was limited in Wednesday and Thursday’s practice, but expects to be formally cleared for full contact by Sunday.

“There were no symptoms the next day,” Porter said. “I feel good, and I’m good to go.”

Quote of the day: “We’ve played well for two weeks and not great for one. The only difference is to get the heck off blocks, go make plays. That’s’ why we’re here. That’s what gets me excited. We can do that. We put our black jerseys on and get after it." -- Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver on rebounding from Monday’s shaky defensive outing versus Denver.
