This is the first part in a series that spotlights three Raiders-Jaguars matchups to watch Sunday, 1:25 p.m., at the Oakland Coliseum.
Raiders DE Jason Hunter vs. Jaguars RT Luke Joeckel
Tale of the tape:
Hunter (93): 6-foot-4, 270 pounds, seventh season, Appalachian State
Joeckel (76): 6-foot-6, 306 pounds, rookie, Texas A&M
Jaguars right tackle Luke Joeckel was the No. 2 overall pick for a reason. The hulking lineman was expected to step in and play well right away. He’s a force on the line, a strong presence that improves Jacksonville’s offensive front.
He is a rookie and has made some mistakes. He allowed a sack and four quarterback hurries in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which doubled as his NFL debut.
Hunter’s been around the block, and knows how to take advantage of youth. The veteran made several strong plays against the Colts, including a crucial sack on 4th-and-1.
Hunter is a power rusher who excels against the run, but he showed some pass-rush ability that the Raiders need from their defensive ends.
Joeckel has tremendous power, so this matchup should be an interesting one to watch. If he can neutralize Hunter on his own, the Jaguars can devote resources to slowing Lamarr Houston on the other side. If Hunter can pester and get the best of the young player, it would be a huge boon for the Raiders.
