I think we’re happy where we’re at from the receiver position.
Dennis Allen

ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen was looking for a “go-to” receiver in training camp. He never found one.

Allen acknowledged the Raiders don’t have a true No. 1 receiver on the roster, but it wasn’t a source of disappointment. He praised the young pack, where fourth-year pro Jacoby Ford is the older brother.

“I think we have a lot of good receivers,” Allen said. “I think all those guys can step up and make plays. I think we’re happy where we’re at from the receiver position. We have guys that bring different elements and different strengths. We have to find ways to put those guys in position to succeed.”

Denarius Moore and Ford are deep threats. Rod Streater and Brice Butler are smooth route runners that can secure passes in the air. Juron Criner is another young talent in the mix.

All have potential, none have earned No. 1 status.

“I’m not sure who is the No. 1 or No. 2 or whatever,” Streater said. “I’m just trying to do my part by working hard and catching the ball when it’s thrown to me.”

Streater doesn’t care about ranking the receivers, only about moving the football.

“It doesn’t matter to us,” Streater said. “I’m a starter, so I have to catch the ball regardless. If I’m the No. 2 guy, I still have to execute like a No. 1. We all do.”

NOTES
Captains named: Allen announced the Raiders captains, one for each unit. Fullback Marcel Reece, defensive end Lamarr Houston and long snapper Jon Condo earned the title this season.

Ausberry still out: Tight end David Ausberry hasn’t practiced since separating his shoulder Aug. 16 at New Orleans. The Raiders are holding out faint hope he’ll be ready for Sunday’s opener against Indianapolis, but that decreases with each practice missed.

“He’s not ready to go, but I won’t have to decide on his status until later in the week,” Allen said. “We’ll see how he continues to progress as the week goes on.”
