The Raiders trimmed their roster to 53 on Saturday afternoon. Four quarterbacks and two punters made the cut. Seriously.

Those numbers won't stick. It shows that this roster is far from finalized. The Raiders obviously plan to work on it before the regular-season opener at Indianapolis on Sept. 8.

The Raiders are hoping to trade one of their punters. They couldn’t give up on fourth-round draft pick Tyler Wilson, a quarterback who didn’t play much in the preseason. They only have one middle linebacker after letting Omar Gaither go.

Head coach Dennis Allen wasn’t available for comment after the roster cut, so the team won't provided insight into their decisions until after Monday's practice.

Defensive end Andre Carter was the biggest name on the cut list. He was on thin ice after a lackluster preseason, so his release wasn’t a complete surprise. Tony Bergstrom was placed on injured reserve after suffering a foot injury, which ensured veteran Mike Brisiel stayed on the team.

The Raiders are holding on to receiver Andre Holmes, who was placed on the reserve-suspended list, where he’ll stay while serving a four-game ban for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

One transaction is virtually guaranteed. Left tackle Jared Veldheer is expected to go on injured reserve with a designation to return. The Raiders will likely use that spot on another offensive lineman.

Defensive end David Bass was the only member of the 2013 draft class to get cut. Latavius Murray was placed on injured reserve. Defensive lineman Ryan Robinson and quarterback Matt McGloin were the only undrafted free agents to make the team. Tony Bergstrom was placed on injured reserve, leaving three members of last year's draft class on this season's roster.

The Raiders will iron out this roster during the week. They’ll also form an eight-man practice squad with some of their young roster cuts. Allen said on Friday that he’ll structure his practice squad as a developmental unit, but it typically includes a receiver, a cornerback and a pair of linemen.
