Raiders snap count: Latham sees lion's share vs Packers

Share

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Raiders defensive lineman Darius Latham has slowly risen through the ranks, as undrafted rookies are required to do. They start from nothing and must maximize each opportunity earned.

The Indiana product has certainly done that, dating back to the offseason program. He has excelled in practice and was an effective power rusher and run defender in the exhibition opener at Arizona.

That got him 37 defensive snaps in Thursday’s 20-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers, including a rotation with the starting unit. He had a pair of tackles and frequently pushed his way into the backfield and, if he keeps it up, he might force his way onto the 53-man roster.

“That’s the ultimate goal, but it’s not something I spend time thinking about,” Latham said. “I only care about performance. If I play well, everything else will take care of itself.”

The Raiders need quality at the closed end/defensive tackle spot, especially while Mario Edwards Jr. recovers from a hip strain. It’s also a spot that rotates frequently and requires gap control versus the run and interior pass rushing in sub packages.

“I’m comfortable with what they’re asking me to do,” Latham said. “I have experience playing in most formations. I’m trying to make a good impression, and will do anything to help the team win.”

Snap counts from the second (and third) exhibition can be solid indicators of positional hierarchy among young players. Starters play more in those games so, if a snap count plummets, that’s a bad sign. It’s good news for Latham, receiver Johnny Holton and offensive linemen Vadal Alexander and Denver Kirkland that they’re receiving frequent chances to be evaluated.
