Source: Raiders give McGloin second-round RFA tender

The Raiders want their quarterback room to remain static. They took a step toward that end by offering backup and restricted free agent Matt McGloin a second-round contract tender, a league source confirmed on Friday morning.

NFL Network first reported the news.

The league hasn’t announced RFA tender amounts, but this year’s second-round contract tender is expected to be worth $2.553 million.

McGloin is still able to explore the open market, but the Raiders have the right to match any offer sheet given to the fourth-year quarterback. If they don’t match, the Raiders would receive a second-round pick.

McGloin was an undrafted free agent, meaning they wouldn't receive compensation had they given McGloin an original-round tender. That would be a risky proposition for the Raiders considering the premium placed on quality backup quarterbacks.

By contrast, a second-round pick would be a steep price for McGloin unless a team viewed him as a starting option in 2016. It seems likely that, with this tender, McGloin will be a Raider next season. The Raiders are free to explore a long-term contract with McGloin, or he can sign the tender and play on a one-year deal.

McGloin signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent and made an excellent impression in his rookie training camp. He beat out then fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson for the No. 3 job and ended up starting six games that year. He played twice in 2015 for brief spells while Carr dealt with injury issues.

Teams can give restricted free agents an original-round tender, or a second-round or first-round designation. Each level increases the price tag and obviously increases the cost for other teams to sign a restricted free agent away from his original team.
