ALAMEDA – Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that he has received “indications” that he’ll be retained for a third season despite posting a pair of 4-12 campaigns that have left his job status in question.

A source confirmed those indications have come directly from general manager Reggie McKenzie, who has recommended that Allen keep his job in 2014. Allen, however, has yet to meet with Raiders owner Mark Davis, who will have final say whether the embattled head coach and his staff remain intact.

Until Allen meets with Davis, a formal team announcement regarding Allen’s future is not imminent. A separate NFL source told CSN reporter Fallon Smith on Monday that Davis plans to meet with Allen on Jan. 6 and inform him of his decision at that time. Davis could change his mind between then and now, but he is expected to give Allen another year to turn around the franchise.

Allen’s job security is on the line after a disappointing finish to the 2013 season in which the Raiders lost six straight and eight of nine. Allen believes the Raiders have made progress despite so many losses, and are on the right track to become a playoff contender in the near future.
