Gretzky, Crosby talk potential NHL lockout

An NHL legend from the past doesnt believe an NHL lockout will be prolonged, while the leagues best player of today doesnt really want to talk about it.

Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby recently gave their thoughts on the current NHL labor situation, as a lockout is all but certain when the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. PST.

I really think this one wont be as long as the last one, Gretzky told CTV Atlantic, referring to the NHLs lost 2004-05 season due to a labor dispute. I think some how, some way, both sides will come together and well be playing hockey sooner rather than later.

Gretzky, whose comments are similar to those of the Sharks' Ryane Clowe on Monday, also doesnt anticipate any long-term damage to the sport in terms of its loyal fan base.

The game itself, though, is such an enjoyable sport and such a way of life in a lot of cities that ultimately a lot of fans will come back, although being upset and being mad. They enjoy the game too much.

Crosby, meanwhile, is one of several hundred players in New York City on Wednesday as the players association holds internal meetings as well as one final sit-down with the NHL in the hopes of avoiding a lockout. The NHL has already issued a press release for media availability on Thursday, where its expected a formal statement announcing the lockout will be forthcoming.

Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins star, is considering playing in Europe, according to Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. But that doesnt mean hes lost all hope that this season will start on time.

"Don't even want to think about it. I want to play, he said.
