NEWARK - Sharks center Logan Couture will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks with a fractured right fibula at the ankle, general manager Doug Wilson announced on Friday.

Couture will return to the San Jose area and have surgery on Saturday “under the direction of Kaiser Permanente’s medical team,” according to Wilson.

The 26-year-old Sharks forward was hurt on Thursday towards the end of practice at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. During a five-on-five drill Couture went down in the corner and looked to be in significant pain. After needing a couple minutes to sit up, he was helped off of the ice by Brent Burns and Brenden Dillon, and was putting no weight on his right leg which was being elevated by a team trainer.

According to Couture, the accident occurred during a battle drill when his skate got caught in a rut and a teammate fell on top of him.

"All of his weight on my ankle and I could feel it pop," Couture told CSNCalifornia.com.

Later, he was seen leaving the arena on crutches with his right ankle in a boot according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

Couture has centered what has arguably been the team's best line through three games with wingers Joel Ward and Patrick Marleau. Named as an alternate captain before the season, has one assist and a +1 rating through three games.

San Jose has recalled forward Nikolay Goldobin from the AHL Barracuda. Goldobin was set to take part in the morning skate at Prudential Center on Friday, where the Sharks will continue their road trip against the Devils.

The 20-year-old former first round draft pick has yet to make his NHL debut. Last season, Goldobin posted 11 goals and 21 points in 38 games in the Finnish league. He was scoreless in his first game with the Barracuda after he was one of the final cuts in training camp.

The Sharks also have forward Ben Smith, who has been a healthy scratch for the first three games, on their roster.
