The Sharks placed forward Tommy Wingels on Injured Reserve on Saturday morning with what is being described as an upper body injury.

The move cleared a roster spot for the promoted forward Eriah Hayes.

Wingels has missed two games since going hard into the end boards on Dec. 29. Coach Todd McLellan said that the injury is not head-related, which is good news for Wingels, who was knocked from a game on Oct. 24 after an apparent high hit from Zdeno Chara. Last season, Wingels missed five games after going violently into the glass, face first, in a game in Dallas on Feb. 23.

“Tommy is coming on the trip, he won’t be ready to play in Denver, but we’ll see what happens after that,” McLellan said.

After the Saturday matinee in Colorado, the Sharks play the Blackhawks on Sunday, the Predators on Tuesday and the Red Wings on Thursday. The transaction is retroactive to the last time Wingels took the ice -- Dec. 29 -- making the forward eligible for activation Sunday, Jan. 5.
