Buster Posey named NL starting catcher for 2017 MLB All-Star Game

SAN FRANCISCO — Not much has gone right for the Giants this season, but for 84 games, Buster Posey has been a consistent positive. On Sunday, he was rewarded.

Posey was selected as the National League’s starting All-Star catcher for the third consecutive year. The All-Star selection is the fifth overall for Posey, who is the lone representative for a team that has played much better of late, but remains at the bottom of the standings.

Posey leads the majors with a .339 batting average at the time of the voting announcement and he has 10 homers and a .937 OPS. He leads National League catchers in just about every category and his 3.0 WAR coming into Sunday ranks him sixth in the National League.

Posey is the first National League catcher to start three straight All-Star Games since Mike Piazza’s run ended in 1999. He also started in 2012, and he is now the seventh National League catcher to start four times.

This is the first time since 2007 that the Giants have just one All-Star. Barry Bonds was the representative last season. The Giants had four All-Stars each of the past two seasons.
