Sanchez will miss at least a few starts with biceps tightness

For the second time, Logan Webb avoided a lengthy stint in the bullpen when another Giants starter went down with an injury.

The Giants needed to clear a roster spot on Saturday with Kevin Gausman returning and will need a rotation spot on Sunday when Johnny Cueto returns, and they killed two birds with one stone by putting Aaron Sanchez on the IL with right biceps tightness. Manager Gabe Kapler said Sanchez has been dealing with the issue for his last couple of starts.

"We're not going to look too far out in advance on this one," Kapler said. "We're just going to give him a little bit of a blow and allow that right biceps to get to full strength."

Sanchez has a 3.18 ERA in six starts but has yet to pitch past the fifth inning and totaled 8 2/3 innings in his two previous starts. He gave up four runs on seven hits at Coors Field on Tuesday. Sanchez has managed to mostly be effective even as his velocity has dipped into the upper 80s, but it's been clear for several weeks that he wasn't right physically. He had shoulder surgery in 2019 and admitted after an April start that he was having trouble bouncing back from appearances.

Aside from one bad inning at Coors Field, Webb had a good run in place of Cueto, who will return from a lat strain. Webb had previously been pulled from the rotation for Alex Wood's return, but after one appearance he got that job back because Cueto got hurt. Wood and Webb will start the two games against the Rangers at Oracle Park on Monday and Tuesday.
