Report: Sharks eyed Kessel trade with Coyotes around draft

Share

The Sharks must be sick of seeing Phil Kessel score on them.

Sportnet's Elliott Friedman reported last Thursday that the Sharks were interested in acquiring veteran Phil Kessel from the Arizona Coyotes around the 2021 NHL Draft, but such a move will not be happening

Kessell, 33, isn't the player he once was but he still is a servicable veteran. And he might as well be called a Sharks killer.

The No. 5 overall pick from the 2006 NHL Draft scored 20 goals last season, 10 of which came against the Sharks. He scored 13 points in eight games against San Jose. That's 30.2 percent of his total points for 2020-21.

Kessel scored 43 total points last season in 56 games, and 38 points in 70 games the season before with Arizona.

It appears the Sharks' main focus now is keeping Tomas Hertl in San Jose for the long term.
