The 49ers have added 22 rookies to their 90-man roster. The list includes nine draft picks and 13 undrafted signees.
The newcomers went through two practices over the weekend at rookie camp and are allowed to join the 49ers' offseason program next week on a full-time basis.
There are a lot of moving parts, as the 49ers' coaching staff determines at which positions the players best fit with the team. Although many players -- veteran and rookies -- will work at multiple positions, this preliminary, unofficial and unauthorized depth chart lists each offensive or defensive player only at one position. San Francisco 49ers
--Garnett spent last season reshaping his body and getting into better physical condition to be able to function in Kyle Shanahan's scheme, which asks a lot of its offensive guards. Right now, Tomlinson and Cooper must be considered the front-runners, based on their experience. The 49ers would like to sign Tomlinson to a multi-year deal, and the 49ers believe Cooper resurrected his career while starting 13 games last season for Dallas.
--Gilliam is the favorite to fill the role of swing tackle -- the backup on both the left and right sides.
--The signing of Person gives the 49ers a proven backup center. But Magnuson is also a player who could be a valuable player on game days because of his ability to step in as a reserve at every spot on the offensive line.
--The 49ers traded up to get Pettis in the second round, which shows Shanahan envisions him as a major contributor. Pettis is capable of playing each of the three receiver positions, including the slot.
--It will be difficult for any of the running backs to break into the top three, ahead of McKinnon, Breida or Mostert. The reason Mostert is so valuable is because of his versatility. Through most of last season, he was evaluated as one of the top special-teams performers in the NFL. The third running back must have value on special teams. The onus is on Williams to work a lot harder than a year ago and earn his way into the mix.
--Street sustained a torn right ACL in a pre-draft workout and is expected to remain on the non-football injury list for his entire rookie season.
--Yes, Foster is listed as the starter at the mike linebacker, though his presence on the team is anything but a certainty due to off-field issues. The 49ers certainly cannot expect him to be available for all 16 games. The 49ers increased their depth at the inside linebacker positions this offseason with the re-signing of Coyle, the addition of Toomer, a veteran, and the third-round selection of Warner.
--The mike and will linebacker positions are considered interchangeable in the 49ers' scheme, Shanahan said. The major difference is the mike is the player who communicates with the rest of the defense.
--Ward is an interesting case. He will line up at cornerback in the offseason program in the spot the 49ers expect Sherman to play during the regular season. Sherman is coming off Achilles surgery, and the 49ers want to bring him back slowly. He should be available at the opening of training camp. Shanahan said if Ward plays well at cornerback, that's where he'll remain. On the surface, Ward would appear to be the front-runner to win the job at free safety. But if Ward remains at cornerback, Colbert would be in line to start at free safety.
--Moore is also a candidate at free safety, but the 49ers will first see what he can do at cornerback.
--D.J. Reed will also get a look at free safety, but his best fit in this defense appears to be at nickel back -- initially as Williams' backup.
