Why Bill Simmons' top do-over wish is KD not joining Warriors

Steph Curry last Saturday night captivated millions of people around the world.

The two-time NBA MVP racked up 57 points (19-for-31 from the field, 11-for-19 on 3s) and five assists, and did stuff like this:

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Luka Doncic recorded 42 points and 11 assists, and the Dallas Mavericks notched the 134-132 victory.

The Ringer's Bill Simmons was locked in to the dual, and his main takeaway took him back to a decision Kevin Durant made in July 2016.

"I realized something watching the Curry-Doncic game on Saturday night," Simmons said Wednesday on his podcast. "If I had to do it over again -- if I could have one NBA do-over non-Boston related from the last 10 years -- it would be for [Kevin] Durant not to go to the Warriors.

"We lost out on Steph Curry as the John Wick. I don't really care if Steph Curry wins the title or not, I just miss watching him as the best guy on a team. And because he's such an awesome teammate, he rightly took a step a little bit sideways [and] kind of shared the steering wheel with Durant -- especially in the playoffs.

"I just miss this [version of Curry]."

Even though he knew that joining forces with Durant would limit him in some ways, Curry recruited the two-time NBA Finals MVP and welcomed him with open arms. The three-time NBA champion simply wanted to win as many titles as possible, and knew that Durant onboard would help accomplish that.

But there definitely are some Warriors fans who would have preferred the franchise beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals. This almost assuredly would have resulted in Durant signing elsewhere, which would have paved the way for Curry possibly emulating the type of season he had in 2015-16 when he became the only unanimous MVP in league history. And on top of that, perhaps the Warriors still would have been able to win another title.

Others are 100 percent satisfied with how everything played out, and feel extremely fortunate that KD rocked a Dubs uniform for three seasons.

It's ancient history now.

All that matters at this point is that Curry arguably is playing the best basketball of his career, and is showing no signs whatsoever of slowing down any time soon.

Just enjoy the present and hope that KD takes the court Saturday night when the Warriors host the Brooklyn Nets at Chase Center.
