SANTA CLARA – Tight end Vance McDonald, whom the 49ers signed to a five-year contract extension on Friday, sustained a shoulder injury Sunday and did not return.
McDonald did not catch a pass before leaving the game in the first half of action against the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium. After being taken to the locker room for further observation, the 49ers announced early in the third quarter that McDonald would not return to action.
McDonald, a fourth-year professional, is the 49ers’ third-leading receiver with 24 catches for 391 yards and four touchdowns.

Scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, McDonald and the 49ers agreed to a contract extension on Friday. The official terms of the deal are expected to be known in the middle of the week, but a source told CSNBayArea.com the contract contains a signing bonus of between $5 million and $6 million.
